The Glass Pedestal
Ice Colored Glass
You have surrounded me with glass.
Sat me on a pedestal….
Isolated me from the world
and all of its harsh elements.
I see the snow falling all around me
looking up at the clouds with childlike expectation
I stick my tongue out to catch the pretty little flakes.
I close my eyes, and wait…
After what seems an eternity
I open my eyes and realize that the snow has stopped somewhere above my head.
The glass ceiling has stopped the fall.
Snow banks start to rise.
I am cold.
Slowly the smile fades from my face and I drop my head in resignation.
I smell the rain in springtime
I wish to climb down from the pedestal
I want to jump in the puddles.
I want to dance and twirl in circles with my hands flung over my head!
I want to splash and kick my feet
From the sheer joy of feeling mud squish between my toes…
I slip off my shoes and try to climb down, expectantly searching for a hand hold, a foot hold,
Some flaw in the pedestal that I can grasp
There are none to be found.
I watch the rainbows form as the clouds dissipate
and realize that I cannot experience the drops of water on my upturned face.
Tears form in my eyes and I create my own rain storm…
one sparkling crystal drop slides down my cheek,
you quickly wipe it away.
I don’t even get to taste the salt of my own storm…
I am dry
You have placed me up high amidst the knick knacks
and figurines
Look but don’t touch
On this pedestal I am alone. Lost in my thoughts
Wondering…
How can I climb down from here when you cannot,
no will not
Accept that I am flawed?
I am a real person
I live
I breathe
I swear
I cry
I want
I need
To Breath...
Living in this glass house, I throw rocks as hard as I can against invisible panes of glass.
Nothing happens
You catch the rocks and gently place them on the ground
Looking up at me on the pedestal and smiling
Charmed I’m sure
I sigh...

How sad to have to settle for living life from afar and to not be accepted as is. This is touching and one of my favorites of yours.
Thank you. I feel that way so much of the time. The problem is that when people put you on a pedestal they will invariably kick it out from under you eventually.
